Fabrication of Hematite nanostractures by using an imidazolium-based ionic liquid

α-Fe2O3 (hematite) nanostructures were synthesized by a simple reflux method, using N-pentyl imidazolium bromide as ionic liquid with sodium hydroxide in water. N-pentyl imidazolium bromide was synthesized using menshutkin reaction and Infrared (IR) and Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies were used for its characterization. The effect of different ratios of ionic liquid to FeCl3 and calcination on the morphology and crystallinity of products was also investigated. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the nanostructures. Based on the results, orientation and morphology of nanoparticles in the presence of the ionic liquid is more regular than the control sample and the best results achieved in the 3:1 ratio of NaOH to FeCl3 and 3:1 ratio of ionic liquid to FeCl3. Hematite nanospheres with good particle distribution were the products of this process. Also calcination of the products after reflux caused better crystallinity of hematite nanoparticles. This method is a green technology for preparing metal oxide nanoparticles with different morphologies.
