School-based management

the decentralization of education systems is one of the most important processes taking place today. School-based management is an alternative to the typical pattern of school district governance that centralizes authority in the district office. It is a system of administration in which the school is the primary unit of educational decision-making. Responsibility for certain decisions about the budget, personnel, and the curriculum is placed at the school level rather than the district level, thereby giving especially principals but also teachers, students, and parents’ greater control over the educational process. The success of school-based management depends on the context and conditions in which it is implemented. More generally, the paper intends to introduce a picture of school-based management and some of its characteristics with a brief explanation of experiences of developed and developing countries in school-based management.
