The effect of ginseng extract on treatment of Spirocerca lupi

Background: Spirocercosis is caused by the nematode Spirocerca lupi in dogs. The most clinical signs is vomiting, weakness, pyrexia, respiratory abnormalities, anorexia and melena. Esophageal or gastric granulomas and esophageal osteosarcoma, aortic aneurysms are found in some dogs. Methods: 8 dogs which infected with Spirocerca lupi used in this experiment. They were divided in two groups of 4 members. In one group known as control group, they were treated by surgical treatment and in others after surgical treatment they were fed diets containing 1 5 mg/kg body weight/day ginseng extract to assess its effect on immunological activity for 90 consecutive days.Results: results proved that none of dogs which treated with ginseng had Relapses of disease and fecal examination didn’t show any eggs. Conclusion: It confirmed that ginseng extract can enhance immune system and prevent relapses of disease that can be useful as herbal treatment.
