Water-based dispersion of polymeric nanocomposites provide super physical properties such as barrierity which is essential for drug packagings and is strictly depended to the degree ofexfoliation of layered clay platelets plus location of clay platelets related to the polymer particles. Consequently, thetortuous path of the diffusion way against gases and water vapor should increase polymer barrierity without sacrificing the other polymer mechanical properties and matrix adhesion [1]. Copoly (styrene/butyl acrylate) particles with clay concentration up to 5 wt% and total solid contents of 20 %was reported [1]. In this study, in-situ miniemulsion polymerization technique was used to synthesize copoly (styrene/butyl acrylate) nanocomposite latex particlesincluding Cloisite®30B up to 10 wt% with solid contents of 20 and 40% respectively and degree of exfoliation and encapsulation was studied. Kinetically studies revealed in higher concentrations, clay behavior was quite different which in another article will be presented.
