Self-Healing, Water-Based Acrylic Coatings Filled with Linseed Oil- Loaded Microcapsules: Effects of CNT at Microcapsule-Resin Interface

In this study, ethyl cellulose-based microcapsules containing linseed oil (LO) were prepared. Surface of the microcapsules was then modified by oxidized CNTs (Ox-CNT) to improve possible interfacial interactions between the microcapsules and surrounding matrix. Self-healing property of microcapsules embedded in a water-based acrylic coating was evaluated. Surface morphology of the microcapsules was studied using SEM. Healing properties of the coatings was observed by optical microscopy. The results supports absorption of the oxidized CNTs on the microcapsules’ surface positioned as a ring around the microcapsule. The results also revealed that LO was released from the ruptured microcapsules and healed the applied scratch on the coating surface.
