Porous gelatin/PVA scaffolds for skin cell culture

A combination of freeze gelation and freeze drying methods were used to fabricate gelatin/PVA porous scaffolds. The results showed an effective role of PVA incorporation in enhancing water absorption and mechanical strength. PVA also helped regulated biodegradation rate of the scaffolds. Human skin cells were cultured on these scaffolds to evaluate their potential in cell culture applications. The results showed good biocompatibility of the scaffolds as evidenced by growth and proliferation of skin cells. Thus the scaffolds could be suitable candidates as wounded skin substitutes
