Economic load dispatch (ELD) is one of the significant problems in power system operation. The aim of ELD is to allocate active power among generation units economically. Fundamental constraint of ELD problem is to meet the load demand. However, in practical applications, it is necessary some technical constraints such as prohibited operating zones and ramp rate limit of generators to be considered. This paper presents an approach according to Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm to solve ELD problem considering the mentioned constraints as well as valve point loading effects and transmission network losses. The efficiency of proposed method has been evaluated in three case studies. Simulation results demonstrate that the TLBO algorithm is able to converge to a better quality solution compared with some other meta-heuristic methods reported in recent literatures.
