This two-part paper surveys the power system performance in developing and transition countries. In this first part a wide range of problems which are typical for developingcountries including investment shortfalls, inefficient generation and transmission, lack of skilled workers, coal production andprocessing, are covered. Considering the specific position, fast expanding economy, diversity of typical problems, transparency and availability of data, power system of India is selected forstudy.
