چکیده

The goal of the study was to investigate the impact of using photographic memory as a facilitative device to develop idioms acquisitions in Mahdavy high school in Kerman. To this purpose, one hypothesis and question were proposed in term of the effect of picture in learning idioms. It was an experimental method of research conducted with two female groups of teenage pre-intermediate EFL learners. The first 18 learners made up the experimental group (EG) and the other made up the control group (CG) with the same number of learners. The same instructors and teaching hours were used for both groups. The only difference lied in using idiom definition for the CG and using pictures for the EG. Two types of instruments were used in the study: The Oxford Placement Test to homogenize the given population, and the test of idiom that was used as pre and posttest. The pretest meant to tap the initial knowledge of the learners in both groups. Two tests of idiom were implemented in this study. The main teaching source for both groups was English Idioms in Use by Micheal McCarthy & Felicity O’Dell (2002). Besides, the researcher applied t-test as a parameter to discover any difference between the performances of the two groups. Finally, the Spearman correlation proved that a very high correlation could be observed between the two tests. Data analysis proved that the learners in EG outperformed the learners in the CG and they did better in developing their idiom knowledge. Regarding the role of the study, enough emphasis on using the picture in teaching idioms led to the EG improvement. The results reveal more improvement in learning amount among the learners in the EG.
