Investigating the effect of simultaneous ultrasonic vibration of tool and addition of Carbon Nanotube into the dielectric on machining characteristics and suface integrity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy in EDM process

چکیده

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been used in various fields of research due to their unique properties. In this study multi-wall carbon nanotubes are added to the dielectric used in the EDM and ultrasonic assisted EDM process to evaluate its performance when machining the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, by means of copper electrodes. The effect of adding CNT powders to the dielectric and applying ultrasonic vibration to tool on the material removal rate, tool wear ratio and surface integrity of the work piece were investigated. It is found that addition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in dielectric shows significant improvement in machining stability; reduces material removal rate and too wear ratio. Ultrasonic assisted EDM processes increases MRR and TWR. The results clearly showed that addition of CNT particle has decreased the surface roughness and vibration of tool with ultrasonic frequency deteriorates surface roughness. Applying ultrasonic vibration to tool and adding CNT powder to dielectric reduce length and width of surface cracks and depth of metal altered zone. Surface conditions in terms of Surface cracks and metal altered zone are very favorable in CNT added dielectric ultrasonic assisted EDM process
