Intercultural Sensitivity and Pragmatic Awareness in Expressing Requests and Apologies

The present study aimed to follow two fold purposes of investigating the possible interrelations between intercultural sensitivity and knowledge of speech acts, in addition to identifying attitudinal ratings of appropriateness across EFL learners. In so doing, 03 advanced EFL learners were studied in terms of their intercultural sensitivity as well as knowledge of request and apology speech acts. The learners were firstly administered Oxford Quick Placement Test (OQPT) for identification of their English proficiency level. Then the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) devised byChen and Starosta (0333), whose main constructs were concerning intercultural communication, were distributed. Finally, a modified version of DiscourseCompletion Test (DCT) adapted from Kuhi and Jadidi (0310) was given to the participants to check their knowledge of the speech acts across interlocutors with different power (i.e. high & equal) and social distances (i.e. intimate & strange). Following correlation coefficient analyses, the results indicated the regular association of cultural and pragmatic knowledge in the sense that cultural sensitivity underpinned the pragmatic success represented mainly in the appropriate use of speech acts. In addition, there was a positive correlation between intercultural sensitivity and appropriate ratings of supportive moves. Among the varied implications of such findings, it can be pinpointed that cultural sensitivity provides the perceptual groundings for any attempt to develop pragmatic awareness.
