Development of the character of protagonist of The Sorrow of Young Werther by Goethe.

In 1774 a book seller in the city of (Laypzig) published a book that only had 150 pages. the title of this book was the sorrow of young Werther by Johann wolfgang von Goethe. Then only 25 years old and a student of law from Frankfort. Soon he became famous for his epistolary and thinly autobiographic novel which is the story of a young man ,Werther, who fall in love with a beautiful girl named Charlotte, but she was engaged with Albert. it is representative of Goethe's style and a tragic love story which he repeatedly reworked over the next dozen of years. This essay is about the development of Werther's character, the novel's protagonist. By analyzing his character through the novel, it will be argued that Goethe has created two different character in one figure named Werther in his novel. Before falling in love ,Werther is a man who passionately appreciate anything around him for its intrinsic value. After falling in love Werther changes due to Charlotte's opinions. The second dimension of his character go through three stages: First, feeling of happiness in the early days of meeting Charlotte. Second, Feeling of apathy about everything. Third, dejection which in the end leads him to suicide. Although he mentioned a different reason, I will argue that the actual reason behind his suicide is that he is assured that he will always be Charlotte's friend rather than her lover regardless of Albert's presence and Charlotte will not marry Werther, this is the climax of the story.
