One of the most challenging problems of the last decades is the presence of recalcitrant hydrocarbons compounds (gas oil) in the effluents of drilling industry, due to their toxicity on both human health and environment. Although conventional biological processes are usually efficient for the degradation of pollutants in wastewaters, most of these compounds are not effectively removed. In this context, Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are illustrated for the removal of organic pollutants which not treatable by conventional techniques due to their high chemical stability and/or low biodegradability. In order to reduce operating costs associated to the application of AOPs and enhance remediation, combination of biological treatment and advance oxidation processes in drilling industry is recommended
