چکیده

The draw solution is the driving force in forward osmosis (FO) process. In this work, hydrophilic magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized through the co-precipitation approach and their performance of FO as draw solution were evaluated. Chitosan were used as functionalizing agent to enhance the dispersibility and stability of magnetic nanoparticles. Morphology, particles size and structure of this nano composite were characterized with field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The results indicated that chitosan coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized with an average diameter of 20nm. Cellulose triacetate membrane were synthesized by immersion precipitation process for forward osmosis application. The FO performance was evaluated using deionized water. The results demonstrated that magnetic nanoparticles coated with chitosan can generate high osmotic pressure and consequently high water flux. These nanoparticles can be easily separated from the diluted draw solution by an external magnetic field.
