Industrial induction motors (IMs) normally have low efficiency and power factor. It is proven that line start permanent magnet synchronous motors are good situated for induction motors. This paper presents a successful design of a single-phase line start permanent magnet synchronous motor (SP-LSPMSM) by small modification of an existing single-phase induction motor. To minimizing costs and easy manufacturing, designing performed with lowest change in structure of induction motor. Two dimensional finite element method used in analysis performance of motor. The performance comparison of amended SP-LSPMSM and original IM indicates that high efficiency and near unity power factor achieved by SP-LSPMSM.
