چکیده

The objective of this study is to investigate how weathering of electro deposition (ED) layer affects the overall chipping behavior of automotive coating systems. For this goal, ED layers were exposed to weathering condition for various times before being further proceeded for primer layer applications. Two different white coating systems (mono- and two-layer) were selected as top coats. Various test and techniques including Gloss measurements, chipping and pull-off tests, digital photography and FTIR analysis were performed. It was concluded that aging of ED layer due to decrease in interfacial adhesion, led to inferior chipping results. In addition, it was found that monocoat solid topcoat had a better chipping performance and tolerated less variation during weathering in comparison with two-layer top coating systems.
