World developments on caring about environment and mortality of fossil resources accelerated attitude towards using renewable energies and draw more attention day to day. Iran is one of the countries which is placed on the geothermal energy belt and has a high level of potential from aspect of geothermal energy. In this article we dealt with origin of geothermal energy and its direct and indirect applications. Also its features and characteristics and advantages and limitations were discussed and then its environmental effects were investigated.
