Cell lines are fundamental tools for biological research.Cross-contamination and misidentification of cell linesare widespread. It is something about 20% of the cellsused in medical research as estimations showed. Toprevent any inconsistency in the researches using celllines, authentication of cells before running any projector research is required. Currently there are severalmain methods to authenticate cell lines based on interand intra-species analysis. The human and animalcell bank at IBRC (Iranian Biological Resource Centre)authenticates any cell line entered the bank. Two methodsare performed at IBRC for molecular authentication: 1)STR (Short Tandem Repeat) identification for detectionof any interspecies cross contamination of human celllines, 2) Species Identification based on multiplex PCRfor Cytochrome Oxidise I (COI) gene for detection ofany interspecies cross contamination between humanand non human cell lines. There are scientific services atHuman and Animal Cell Bank to authenticate researchercell lines before starting their research. This articlediscusses the results of our experiences regarding thisfield.
