Tensile and shear strengths are of great importance in structural designs and research laboratories. Different ways have been proposed for evaluating these properties in the literature, but one of the best methods is measuring one and using the predictive equation to find the other. The ratio of tensile strength to shear strength seems to be constant but dependency of this ratio to various parameters like strain rate, temperature and etc. is not fully understood. In the present work, a novel test specimen is presented which can be used in determination of shear and tensile strengths and their proportion. Three different metals, Aluminum, Brass and Steel were used in this study to address generality of the procedure and conclusions. Samples were tested under quasi static loading. Then to verify our test method and also to recognize governing failure mechanisms we modeled the test environment in the LS-DYNA software. Our results indicate that designed specimen is capable of characterizing shear and tensile strength and their relation with a simple tension test.
