The Smart Grid (SG), regarded as the next generation power grid, uses two-way flows of electricity and information to create a widely distributed automated energy delivery network. In this paper, we explore the major principles of delivering energy to end user customers in a smart infrastructure system. Namely, generation, transmission, distribution and new paradigms such as: microgrids, grid-to-vehicle/vehicle-to grid and specifically for the distribution system the Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) System. In this regard, we explore the basic definitions and challenges and also possible future directions in smart energy infrastructure system.
