چکیده

This study investigates the design of community-based art centers through the concept of horizontalism, emphasizing its role in fostering social justice, cultural interaction, and the well-being of marginalized groups. Focusing on Rey City and District ۲۰ of Tehran, areas marked by spatial and cultural inequality, the research integrates principles of traditional Iranian architecture, folding philosophy, and social sustainability to propose inclusive and equitable spaces for art creation, experience, and exhibition. Using a qualitative analytical–interpretive method and extensive library-based research, the study identifies architectural pillars that align with socio-cultural contexts of underprivileged areas. Analysis of domestic and international case studies highlights innovative approaches that promote coexistence between humans, art, and nature while expanding cultural accessibility. Findings propose architectural principles such as simplicity, symmetry, horizontalism, and the use of central courtyards, which enhance functional and visual horizontal connectivity across spaces. These strategies not only address spatial, economic, and environmental quality but also ensure aesthetic value and sustainability. The results suggest that adopting horizontalism can contribute to developing human-centered, sustainable, and participatory cultural centers, ultimately enhancing social cohesion, cultural development, and quality of life.
