Characterization of Hydroxyapatite Coating on AZ31 Magnesium Alloy in Different Pulse Voltage

Hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2,(HAP)] coatings were developed on AZ31 magnesium alloy substrate from the electrolyte containing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2),by pulsed voltage electrodeposition method in different voltages. The effect of voltage on the deposit compositions, structure and adhesion of coating were examined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was performed in order to assure the purity and phase compositions of the coating. The morphology of the coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) technique. The adhesion strength of the HAP coated AZ31magnesium alloy samples were assessed by pull-out test according to American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) international standard F1144. The results showed that there was an optimum voltage for the electrodeposition of HAP on AZ31 magnesium alloy. In this voltage the coating was completely uniform,the structure was finer and there was no brushite composition (DCPD or CaHPO4*2H2O) in the coating. In addition the adhesion strength in this voltage was more than the other samples. A uniform and adhesive HAP coating on AZ31 can improve the biocompatibility of the implants
