The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether language learners with different cognitive styles use similar or different strategies in different test types. 60 English language learners were given the Groups Embedded Figure Test (GEFT). The resulting 14 Field Dependent, 24 Field Neutral and 22 Field Independent language learners took vocabulary test in cloze test format. Ten FD and Ten FI examinees were asked to think aloud about the strategies they used to answer the cloze test type and then their strategies were compared. The result showed that FI group had a significantly better performance in cloze test than FD. Likewise, it was observed that participants’ gender has no effect on their performance in answering to cloze test type vocabulary. Finally, the qualitative analyses of the study highlighted specific strategy between FD and FI language learners in answering the cloze test, which emphasized on varieties of strategies used by FI group in giving answer to the cloze test than the FD group. The findings of current study can be useful for language teachers. Being aware of students’ cognitive style as an affective factor, language teachers can guide and support learners both in the language learning and language testing dimensions
