خلاصه مقاله:
This study aimed to investigate the frequency of New Mark`s translation strategies applied to culture-specific items in two Persian translations of ‘The Adventures of Hajji Baba Esfahani’. Mirza Habib’s and Afshar’s translations of Hajji Baba belong to different points in Iran translation history. The former has been done at the end of Qajar dynasty, the beginning of translation era in Iran, and the latter has been carried out in 1370s. Accordingly, investigating their translation tendencies towards the application frequency of different strategies can reveal the possible shift in Persian translation after about 100 years. ‘The Adventures of Hajji Baba Esfahani’ by James Morier along with its two translations were selected as the material of the study and eight chapters (10% of the book) has been selected as the corpus. Newmark’s (1988) translation strategies and his classification of Culture-Specific Items (CSIs) formed the main theoretical framework of the research. Through a sentence-by-sentence contrasting each ST-TT pair of the corpus of the research, instances of CSIs, as the unit of translation, were detected to be analyzed and categorized. The applied translation strategy to each CSI was investigated and grouped into a different category. The application frequency of each strategy has been calculated. The results showed two remarkably different tendencies in the application of translation strategies in two translations. In Afshar`s work the most pervasive translation strategy was Literal Translation with frequency of 31% which can be regarded as a source oriented one. However, in Mirza Habib`s work the most pervasive strategy was Cultural Equivalent with the frequency of 27% which can be regarded as a target oriented strategy. Based on the results of the present study two considerably different translation tendencies have embraced these two translation works. Afshar`s high application of Literal Strategy could be a self-evident sign of the target-oriented nature of his translation. However, Mirza Habib stepped into a totally reverse direction. His remarkable use of cultural strategy showed his extreme inclination towards target oriented translation in a way that some scholars have regarded his work as a pseudotranslation. His work had been considered as an original for a long time. The result of this study and 100 year-gap between above mentioned works revealed that an increasing inclination towards target oriented translation can be interpreted as an undeniable fact of Persian translation
