چکیده

The present study first tries to show the importance of cultural filter in translation quality assessment. In this regard, Juliane House suggested a model for assessing the quality of translation. Secondly, this study aims to assess the translation quality of a literary text, namely, the Song (1) of Solomon from Old Testament which was translated by Ahmad Shamlou from English to Persian and analyzes the most problematic selected samples of source text and target text using House’s TQA Model. The researcher randomly selected song (1) among eight songs of this book contains 17 verses According to House’s model, the hypothesis-a literary work has to be translated overtly and any deviation of it will be considered as an error, examined and considered as a covert one. Thirdly, the next purpose is to identify and then classify the errors to see whether a significant difference can be found or not. For this purpose, the various components of House's translation quality assessment model were described, stressing the importance of using a cultural filter in one particular type of translation and also emphasizing the important contribution of the model's overt-covert typology continuum to translation theory; overt translation is a kind of translation in which TT addresses are not directly addressed. It is also tied to the source language and culture. It has got less cultural problems than covert one. Covert translation is a kind of translation that enjoys the status of an original ST in the target culture. In order to achieve this originality in covert translation, the translator employs a so-called cultural filter .The researcher concluded that in order to find cultural filter two important mismatches must be considered. One is overtly erroneous errors which result from a non-dimensional mismatch and another one is covertly erroneous errors which result from a mismatch in one situational dimension. In this study, the researcher is going to indicate the situations in which the translator of the Song of Solomon has used from cultural filters which are indicative of covert translation and also high quality of translation. Finally, it can be stated that after analyzing the data, the Persian translation can be categorized as a covert kind of translation rather than an overt one, because of the high numbers of overtly erroneous errors or cultural filters.
