چکیده

Jane Austen with her amazing skill of characterization portrays a variety of women in her works. Some of her heroines are happy-go-lucky types with the strongest worry being who they will sit next to at the next tea party, whilst others must deal with heavier burdens life has thrust upon them. Jane Austen's viewpoints on the social roles of women seemed to change and mature between her different novels. This paper aims at comparing the role of women in Northanger Abbey and Pride and Prejudice . In Northanger Abbey she seems to portray women according to Rousseau’s ideas. Her main character, Catherine Morland, is brought up to be the kind of woman Rousseau believes she should be. As she grows, she begins to accept the roles of her sex and becomes a faithful servant to her husband. But in Pride and Prejudice Austen seems to be influenced by Wollstonecraft’s ideas. The main character Elizabeth Bennet asserts her right to autonomous choice by describing herself in Wollstonecraftian terms and proves her moral and intellectual independence. So we can see that how skillfully Austen portrays different kind of women in her works
