چکیده

With insecticide-resistant insects becoming an ever-growing concern, new technologies to control them are needed. With the lack of new chemical classes of insecticides, the development of novel synergists may improve the performance of available insecticides. The aim of this study was to examine cypermethrin alone and in combination with two monoterpenes [cuminaldehyde and (-)-carvone] against Tuta absoluta Meyrick larvae is one of the most destructive pests of tomato because of its great capacity for reproduction, posing a serious threat to production to evaluate their potential to achieve synergism with this insecticide. Cuminaldehyde and (-)-carvone showed good synergism with cypermethrin yielding synergistic ratio (SR) that ranged from ۲.۵۱ – ۶.۶۹ in all tested populations. The results revealed increase in larvae mortality of T. absoluta samples from Minya (MNA), BaniSweif (BSU) and Qalubyia (QAL) by ۹۷.۸, ۸۵.۵, ۶۲.۱% with added cuminaldehyde and ۹۲.۱, ۸۰.۱, ۵۴.۸% with added (-)-carvone to cypermethrin, respectively. Theses mixtures resulted in a significant decrease in the activities of both esterase (EST) and glutathione S-transferase (GST), indicating that inhibition of detoxification contributes to the enhancement or synergism of monoterpenes for cypermethrin. This study highlights the potential of using monoterpenes as insecticide additives to augment the efficacy of insecticidal formulation.
