چکیده

This article examines the crucial role of architecture and urban planning in improving the quality of life for older adults by identifying the key criteria for creating inclusive, age-friendly environments. By addressing the distinct physical, psychological, and social needs of older adults, this study employs a qualitative research approach based on a comprehensive literature review to establish guidelines for designing appropriate spaces for them. Key findings suggest that housing for older adults should feature level surfaces, elevators in multi-story buildings, and appropriately designed bathroom and kitchen facilities to promote independence and well-being. In senior-friendly environments, sidewalks should have smooth, level, non-slip paths, ample width for wheelchairs, curb cuts at street level, and be free of obstacles. Additionally, the inclusion of green spaces and the proximity to public, commercial, and religious services can enhance the ability to meet the needs of older adults, promoting their independence, increasing comfort, and encouraging greater social interaction. These features also help reduce stress and improve the ease of daily living. Clear signage and safety measures such as well-lit paths and barrier-free designs further enhance mobility and independence. This research underscores that well-designed environments not only improve physical mobility and mental comfort but also uphold the dignity of older adults, encouraging their active participation in society. The study provides practical recommendations for policymakers and architects to design homes, neighborhoods, and urban spaces that prioritize access, safety, and social engagement, thereby creating dynamic and sustainable environments for the aging population. Moreover, the research highlights the importance of integrating intergenerational spaces to foster social interaction and reduce isolation among older adults.
