چکیده
Underground structures refer to a diverse array of constructions located beneath the earth's surface, which serve critical functions across various sectors including infrastructure, utility management, and resource extraction. These structures range from subterranean buildings like basements and parking garages to extensive transportation systems such as subways and pedestrian tunnels. The significance of underground construction lies in its ability to optimize land use in densely populated urban areas, mitigate environmental impacts, and enhance the resilience of essential utilities against surface disruptions. The engineering and design of underground structures pose unique challenges, including the need for rigorous geotechnical investigations to assess soil conditions and ensure structural integrity. Geotechnical engineering plays a pivotal role in this process, addressing factors such as load-bearing capacity and groundwater management. Innovations in construction technology, such as automation and data-driven design, are increasingly shaping the future of underground projects, promising enhancements in safety, efficiency, and sustainability. However, the construction and operation of underground structures are not without controversies. Environmental concerns have emerged regarding the impact of underground facilities on ecosystems and groundwater systems, necessitating careful regulatory compliance and risk assessments. Additionally, the industry faces challenges related to technological adoption, including resistance to change and insufficient access to crucial data for optimal decision-making. Historically, underground structures have been utilized for various purposes, from ancient burial sites to modern military bunkers, showcasing the ingenuity of civilizations in overcoming geographical and security challenges. As urbanization continues to rise, understanding and advancing the design of underground structures is essential for meeting the demands of contemporary society while addressing environmental and safety concerns.
