Human red blood cells (RBCs) play a fundamental role in hematology due to their strong association with the pathophysiology of many diseases. As a result, accurate measurement and understanding of the morphological, chemical and mechanical properties of red blood cells is necessary to gain insights into the pathophysiology of various hematological conditions, especially in athletes, and also pave the way for the early diagnosis of the disease. In recent years, optical tweezers have emerged as an advanced tool for manipulating and measuring force on a micro scale. To date, optical tweezers (OTs) have been used to trap and manipulate a wide variety of non-living micro- and nanoparticles, in addition to biological samples such as viruses and bacteria and eukaryotic cells. Significantly, during the past two decades, optical tweezers have been employed as an effective technique to manipulate, probe, measure, and evaluate the biomechanical properties of healthy and unhealthy red blood cells (RBCs). The use of new methods with the aim of improving diagnosis, increasing accuracy in measurements and also reducing damage to living cells has been one of the most important goals in this study. The aim of this review is to synthesize and evaluate current advances in this field, with the aim of highlighting the importance of these techniques in improving our understanding of RBC properties and their potential in advancing early disease detection.
