Dynamic compaction is a widely used method of granular soil improvement with potential damageto nearby structures due to induced vibrations. When these vibrations exceed the allowable levels, different methods such as installing barriers can be utilized. The present study used ABAQUSsoftware, employing a ۳D model verified by the previous in-field studies, to investigate the effects ofopen trench and borehole barriers on vibration attenuation. The study used a row of hollow boreholeswith varying diameters, depths, and center-to-center distances located at a fixed zone as well as someopen trenches with varying lengths, depths, and locations from the tamping point to investigate theperformance of boreholes and trenches regarding the geometrical parameters. The results indicate thatthe trenches have better overall performance than borehole barriers. However, the boreholes arecapable of reducing the vibrations to an acceptable extent if they are properly designed.
