The excessive use of fossil fuels has resulted in significant environmental challenges, including air pollution and global warming. To address these issues, there is a critical need to transition to sustainable energy sources. Hydrogen, as a clean energy source, can play a crucial role in reducing emissions, especially when produced from renewable sources like ethanol which is produced from biomasses. For producing hydrogen from steam reforming of ethanol, there are some challenges such as providing heat, increasing the hydrogen yield, and reducing CO selectivity. Using microreactors reduces the heat and mass transfer resistance and enhances the reactor performance also producing on-board hydrogen in a microchannel reactor eliminates the risk of hydrogen storage at a high volume. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) is a rigorous numerical modeling approach for studying the microreactor performance by changing the reactor geometry, heat supplying method, and operating conditions without experimental costs. In this article, recent developments in the CFD modeling of microreactors for hydrogen production using ethanol steam reforming are reviewed.
