The demand for improved energy efficiency and reduced emissions in diesel engines has driven substantial interest in waste heat recovery technologies, particularly thermoelectric generators (TEGs). TEGs offer the potential to convert waste heat into electrical energy, enhancing overall engine efficiency. This paper reviews the latest advancements in thermoelectric materials specifically designed for diesel engine heat recovery. We explore the fundamental properties that influence thermoelectric performance, such as the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity. The review covers emerging materials including bismuth telluride, lead telluride, skutterudites, half-Heusler compounds, and organic thermoelectric materials, highlighting their respective advantages and limitations. We also discuss various fabrication methods, such as bulk material synthesis, thin-film deposition, and nanostructuring techniques, which play a crucial role in optimizing material properties. The integration of these advanced materials into diesel engine systems requires careful consideration of design, thermal management, and electrical integration. Despite the promising advancements, challenges such as material stability, cost, and scalability remain significant barriers to widespread adoption. We propose potential solutions and future research directions, emphasizing the need for continued innovation in material science and engineering to achieve commercial viability. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current trends and future prospects in the development of thermoelectric materials for efficient waste heat recovery in diesel engines.
