Towards Creating a Newspaper Word List

The main purpose of this study was to establish a newspaper word list that has special importance for reading newspapers. The corpus of this study contained ۱,۲۹۶,۹۷۰ running words collected from four newspaper texts from online resources. The established Newspaper Word List (NWL) contains ۱۳۲۲ word families, which accounts for ۱۵.۲۸% of the running words in the corpus. Without considering the proper names, ۹۴.۰۶% of the running words in the corpus was covered by both the General Service List of English Words (GSL) and the NWL. From these findings, it can be concluded that the NWL can help learners of English as a foreign language who wish to read newspapers and lead them to a better understanding of English newspapers.
