Introduction: Motherhood is a significant aspect of life for many women around the globe. For women in communities where motherhood is highly desired, motherhood is considered crucial to the woman’s identity. Every year an estimated ۲۱ million pregnancies occur among adolescent girls aged ۱۵–۱۹ years in developing countries. Early motherhood is a major health challenge in most developing countries. It has been linked with several adverse outcomes, including mental health difficulties and barriers to completing educational qualifications and workforce participation.
Objective: The aim of this study was to explore mothers' outcomes of early motherhood.
Materials and Methods: This study reviewed ۵ articles from ۲۰۰۰ to ۲۰۲۲ with search on reliable websites such as Medline, Scopus, and WOS. All steps in this systematic review study were based on preferred reporting items for systematic review analysis (PRISMA) guidelines.
Results: Motherhood brings increased responsibilities, social recognition, and a sense of purpose for young mothers. Despite the positive aspects of motherhood, participants faced challenges that affected their lives like coping with increased responsibilities, managing the competition, work and taking care of a baby in a site of settlement. Early motherhood was associated with higher levels of mental health disorders, lower levels of educational achievement, lower levels of workforce participation and lower income.
Conclusion: Healthcare providers need to provide high-quality prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal care services to adolescent mothers and use available opportunities to strongly support them and their children social disadvantage predisposes women to become mothers early.
