Translating Animated Taboo: A Corpus-Based Study of "Rick and Morty" Subtitling Strategies

چکیده

The translation and subtitling of taboo words are specifically examined through a descriptive textual analysis in this research. In this study, taboo words refer to linguistic elements carrying social or cultural sensitivities, often deemed inappropriate. This research aims to investigate strategies employed in the translation and subtitling of taboo words. By identifying and analyzing these strategies, the study seeks to shed light on the most and least utilized approaches. The theoretical framework proposed by Gottlieb in ۱۹۹۲ was used to examine the translation and subtitling procedures employed for taboo words. This particular framework provides a solid theoretical basis for understanding and interpreting linguistic choices in handling sensitive language during translation and subtitling processes. This study involved selecting the animated TV show "Rick and Morty" (۲۰۱۳–present), watching the episodes attentively, and noting down taboo words and their translation in Persian, along with their timings in both Persian and English subtitles. The gathered data, comprising these words and their translations, was organized into a corpus, forming the foundation for our analysis. The analysis of the gathered corpus revealed distinct patterns in the translation and subtitling of taboo words. The predominant strategy, observed in ۶۰.۳۰% of instances, was "transfer." Conversely, putting aside the strategies "transcription", "dislocation", "condensation", "decimation", and "resignation" with ۰ usages, the strategies of "expansion" and "imitation" were the least utilized, each accounting for a mere ۱.۵۰% in the translated and subtitled content
