چکیده
Genetics (French: Génétique) is a branch of biological science that deals with heredity and differences in living things. Genetic epidemiology is the study of the role of genetic factors in determining health and disease in families and in populations, and the interplay of such genetic factors with environmental factors. Genetic epidemiology seeks to derive a statistical and quantitative analysis of how genetics work in large groups. Genetic epidemiology, as a relatively new issue, aims to explore the independent role of genetic-environmental determinants of diseases. Genetic epidemiology studies, depending on the objective, encompass the most preliminary surveys from the attempts to find family history in the occurrence of diseases to the most advanced surveys including specific strategies by clinical trials in the prevention of genetic diseases. Different objectives in genetic epidemiology studies require special methods and study designs. The use of the term Genetic epidemiology emerged in the mid-۱۹۸۰s as a new scientific field. In formal language, genetic epidemiology was defined by Newton Morton, one of the pioneers of the field, as "a science which deals with the etiology, distribution, and control of disease in groups of relatives and with inherited causes of disease in populations". It is closely allied to both molecular epidemiology and statistical genetics, but these overlapping fields each have distinct emphases, societies and journals. Infectious diseases (ID), also known as infectiology, is a medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of infections. An infectious diseases specialist's practice consists of managing nosocomial (healthcare-acquired) infections or community-acquired infections. An ID specialist investigates and determines the cause of a disease (bacteria, virus, parasite, fungus or prions). Once the cause is known, an ID specialist can then run various tests to determine the best drug to treat the disease. In this article, we look at a study on the genetic epidemiology of infectious diseases in humans (design of population-based studies).
