چکیده

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVESInfluenza is a highly contagious zoonotic disease caused by influenza viruses, with avian H۹N۲ influenza virus being a significant pandemic pathogen worldwide. Considering the risk of transmission from pets to humans, this study aims to assess the prevalence of antibodies against avian H۹N۲ influenza virus in dogs in Kerman, southeast of Iran.MATERIALS AND METHODSSerum samples were collected from ۱۷۰ healthy dogs in Kerman from September ۲۰۱۲ to February ۲۰۱۳. A hemagglutination inhibition assay was used to evaluate the presence of antibodies against avian H۹N۲ influenza virus. Data on age, gender, diet, housing type, and contact with other animals were collected through a questionnaire.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONOut of ۱۷۰ samples, ۶۵ (۳۸.۲۳%) tested positive for H۹N۲ antibodies. Dogs with raw diets and those kept in farms with other animals showed higher antibody levels. The susceptibility of dogs to avian H۹N۲ virus has been previously reported, and they can act as potential sources for interspecies transmission and the creation of reassortant influenza viruses. However, the epidemiology and distribution of avian H۹N۲ influenza virus in dogs, particularly in the southeast region of Iran, had not been previously studied.CONCLUSIONThe study highlights the significant seroprevalence of avian H۹N۲ influenza virus in dogs in Kerman, Iran. The findings emphasize the importance of monitoring and controlling infection transmission from dogs, especially in regions with widespread H۹N۲ distribution. To reduce the infection burden and zoonotic risks, close attention to farm dogs and dogs which fed with raw diets seems vital. Public health authorities should consider the role of pets, such as dogs, in transmission of influenza viruses, control achievement and preventive programs respectively.
