Evaluation of philosophical mentality and moral intelligence in faculty members of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences

Background: Developing the power of student thinking and the promoting moral intelligence along with the level of science is dependent to the power of thought, philosophical mentality and the moral intelligence of teachers as well as their teaching methods. Since the status of philosophical mentality and ethical intelligence in faculty members of the universities is unclear, the purpose of this study is to determine the philosophical mentality and moral intelligence in the faculty members of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on ۱۰۰ faculty members of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. The instruments used in this study were Lennick and Kiel (۲۰۱۱) and Philosophical mentality questionnaire, and their reliability was calculated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and obtained ۰.۴۹ and ۰.۵۵۸. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics (independent t-test, Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficient).p value < ۰.۰۵ was considered statistically significant.Results: According to the results, the mean score of moral intelligence and philosophical mentality of faculty members was ۱۶۰.۴۵ ± ۱۲.۵۱ and ۱۲۴.۴۱ ± ۷.۶۰, respectively. The moral intelligence of the majority of teachers (۹۸.۹%) is also high. Meanwhile, ۸۶ of them (۹۷.۷%) had a good philosophical mentality and ۲ (۲.۳%) had a very good philosophical mentality. Also, there was no significant difference between the mean score of moral intelligence and the total score of philosophical mentality in terms of gender, marital status and faculty (p> ۰.۰۵). Pearson correlation coefficient showed that there is a direct correlation between the moral intelligence score of teachers and the total score of philosophical subjectivity and all its dimensions (P <۰.۰۵).Conclusions: According to the findings of this research, it is suggested the strengthening the philosophical mentality of professors by establishing service training course. At the same time, it can be promoted through existing approaches such as encouraging ethical behavior. Also, professors as one of the most important and influential individuals in the life of students can play a main role in personal and social life of students. Moreover, their desired level of ethical intelligence can lead to ethical development of students.
