General Fouling Problems in Industry

About twenty years ago o.l crisis initiated largely by the economic pressure of opec, had simulated an interest in energy management. Conservation of ene rgy has been an aspect of indus triiUechnology for many years. Recently the re has been an intensification of activity to attempt to reduce the energy requirements in response to the high prices to the high prices demanded for energy, particularly oil. One of the major restrictions to good heat exchanger operation is the problem of fouling of the transfer surface [1-5]. In this paper different mechanisms of fouling will be explained and methods to prevent their formation and mitigation will be investigated.
