چکیده

Background: Nurses who are involved in the caring of COVID-۱۹ patients, are at risk of mental distress. The present study was conducted with the purpose of demonstrating the relationship between stress, anxiety, depression and characteristics of nurses who provide care to COVID-۱۹ patients. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using the census method from May to June, ۲۰۲۰ on ۲۲۴ clinical nurses who were working in hospitals affiliated with Babol University of Medical Sciences and were involved in caring for COVID-۱۹ patients. The data collection instruments included the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale - ۲۱ items (DASS-۲۱) and the individual characteristic questionnaire. Bivariate and multivariate binary logistic regressions were computed to identify the associated factors. Results: The mean and the standard deviation for stress, anxiety and depression scores were ۹.۴۷±۷.۳۰, ۹.۲۹±۷.۵۱ and ۸.۸۴±۷.۲۲ respectively. ۱۷.۴% had stress, ۵۴% had anxiety and ۴۳% had a degree of depression. There were significant relationships between the nurses’ stress level and characteristics including age (OR =۳.۰۰۹, ۹۵%CI ۱.۴۶–۶.۱۶, P=۰.۰۰۳), having children (OR=۰.۲۶, ۹۵%CI ۰.۱۱-۰.۶۳, P=۰.۰۰۳), work experience (OR=۴.۵۰, ۹۵% CI ۲.۱۷-۹.۹۶, P=۰.۰۰۰) and employment status (OR=۰.۳۹, ۹۵% CI ۰.۱۶-۰.۹۵, P=۰.۰۴). Moreover, along with these characteristics, job satisfaction (OR =۳.۰۳, ۹۵%CI ۵.۶۴– ۱.۶۳, P=۰.۰۰۰), level of physical activities (OR =۰.۲۶, ۹۵%CI ۰.۰۸–۰.۸۲, P=۰.۰۲), exercising (OR =۲.۲۷, ۹۵%CI ۱.۳۱-۳.۹۰, P=۰.۰۰۳) and violence in the workplace (OR =۰.۲۷, ۹۵%CI ۰.۱۲– ۰.۵۶, P=۰.۰۰۱) also had significant relationships with the nurses’ anxiety level. Furthermore, the relationships between the nurses’ level of depression and characteristics including age (OR =۲.۰۷, ۹۵%CI ۱.۱۵ – ۳.۷۲, P=۰.۰۱۴), work experience (OR =۲۱.۷۹, ۹۵%CI ۱.۰۴ – ۳.۱۰, P=۰.۰۳), job satisfaction (OR=۳.۰۳, ۹۵%CI ۱.۶۳–۵.۶۴, P=۰.۰۰۰), exercising (OR =۱.۷۶, ۹۵%CI ۱.۰۲–۳.۰۴, P=۰.۰۴), having chronic diseases (OR =۰.۳۵, ۹۵%CI ۰.۱۵–۰.۸۱, P=۰.۰۱۴), violence in the workplace (OR =۰.۳۹, ۹۵%CI ۰.۲۰–۰.۷۵, P=۰.۰۰۵) and sleep (OR =۱.۷۷, ۹۵%CI ۱.۰۰–۳.۱۶, P=۰.۰۵۰) were significant. Conclusion: The authorities should consider a number of the individual characteristics of nurses including age, work experience, gender, marital status, having children, job satisfaction, sleep, violence in the workplace and history of chronic disease in their planning and provide psychological support for them. Psychological support services may be needed for nurses in order to protect and promote their mental
