Oxidative stress, characterized by an excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS), plays a significant role in many cellular processes and can lead to the damage of biological molecules and the alteration of their functions. This can result in a range of pathologies if ROS levels exceed the ability of the body's defense mechanisms to neutralize them. In this review, we discuss the markers of oxidative stress associated with HIV-۱ infection, the mechanisms by which the virus leads to high levels of ROS production, and the defense mechanisms of infected host cells. We also examine the limited data available on the impact of ROS on HIV-۱ replication and the role of redox alterations in HIV-۱ pathogenicity, including neurotoxicity and dementia, CD۴+/CD۸+ T-cell exhaustion, increased susceptibility to lung infections, and certainside effects of antiretroviral therapy. Additionally, we compare the pathologies caused by oxidative stress in HIV infection.
