چکیده مقاله:

Introduction and objective: Sleepiness can cause academic failure, decrease in productivity, depression and physical problems. It is important to identify modifiable factors in this disorder. Diet is one of these risk factors that has been given less attention in relation to sleep problems. The current study aim to investigate the correlation between DTAC and daytime sleepiness score in adolescent girls. Methods: A total of ۷۳۳ Iranian adolescent girls aged ۱۲–۱۸ years were recruited into this cross-sectional study. Dietary intake and sleepiness severity score were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire and a Persian translation of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS-IR) was used to assess of daytime sleepiness, respectively. To estimate the DTAC, the oxygen radical absorbance capacity method was used for selected foods. To explore the associations between DTAC and sleepiness, logistic regression was applied using crude and adjusted models. Results: Individuals in the greatest adherence to high DTAC had more intakes of whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, low and high-fat dairy products and lower consumption of refined grains. Also, the intake of vitamin C and β-carotene was higher in these people.Subjects in the highest tertile of DTAC had ۳۶% lower odds of sleepiness compared to those in the first tertile (OR = ۰.۶۴; ۹۵% CI: ۰.۴۲– ۰.۹۷, P for trend = ۰.۰۳); these associations remained significant after adjustments for energy intake, age, BMI p and physical activity (OR = ۰.۵۳;۹۵% CI: ۰.۳۱–۰.۹۲, P for trend =۰.۰۲) adjusted models. Conclusions: An inverse association was observed between the DTAC and the prevalence of day time sleepiness in our population sample of adolescent girls. Further research needs to be conducted in different areas, including longitudinal studies with larger sample sizes.
