چکیده مقاله:

Textbooks are the primary sources of input for Iranian EFL learners which mainly focus on the development of reading comprehension skills. After the transformation of the educational system in Iran, the new English language books of the schools compiled according to the present needs of the students. Although many studies are conducted to analyze English for schools series and the sufficiency of covered skills, still there is a paucity of research on the readability level and linguistically appropriateness of their content. This study evaluated the readability level of Vision series English textbooks and examined whether they are linguistically appropriate for senior high school students. To this end, all excerpts from under-reviewed materials were selected and analyzed by Fry Internet-based programs to determine their readability level. The results revealed that ۹۰% of texts were under the level of the ۱۰th, ۱۱th, and ۱۲th-grade students. The results showed that only ۱۰% (۱ text out of ۱۰) of the reading texts are appropriate to the language level of the students and the rest of the readings are much simpler and not challenging in terms of linguistics knowledge. It was also found that the degree of difficulty of the texts does not follow a specific pattern. It is concluded that the readability of senior high school textbooks is a neglected issue that needs more consideration. The study would provide some implications based on the findings to teachers and material designers for effective teaching, material development, and production and also put forward new avenues for further research.
