Effect of Educational Intervention Based on Theory of Planned Behavior onReducing Smoking and Hookah Use among High School Male Students

Background: Using of smoking and hookah has increased among high school students in recentyears. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the effect of educational intervention basedon Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) on reducing smoking and hookah use among high schoolstudents.Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on ۳۰۰ high school male students in Fasacity, Fars Province, Iran ۲۰۱۹. Subjects were selected by multi-stage sampling method of ۳۰۰people and randomly divided into two groups of intervention (each group of ۷۵ people) andcontrol (each group of ۷۵ people).The data collection tool was a standard questionnaire used inprevious studies based on the theory of planned behavior.The educational intervention for theexperimental group included ۷ sessions of ۴۵-۵۵ minutes using small group discussion, questionand answer, practical demonstrations, videoclips, PowerPoint and booklets. Before theintervention and four months after the educational intervention, both experimental and controlgroups completed the questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS ۲۲ software through Chisquare,independent t-test, paired t-test and McNemar.Results: The mean age of the experimental and control groups was ۱۷.۸۹+۱.۴۶ and ۱۷.۱+۱.۵۸years. The results showed that before the educational intervention, there was no significantdifference between the experimental and control groups in terms of awareness, attitude, subjectivenorms, perceived behavioral control and behavioral intention; however, four months after theeducational intervention, there was a significant increase in the experimental group. Also, beforethe educational intervention, there was no significant difference between the two groups in termsof current smoking and hookah use; however, four months after the intervention, there was asignificant difference between the two groups.Conclusion: Implementing the TPB-directed instructional sessions resulted in reducing smokingand hookah use among high school students
