Effect of smoking on thyroid disorders

Background: Several studies show smoking can cause disorders of thyroid function and causemany of thyroid diseases which are effective on the public, because of chronicity of many of thesediseases and increased expenses and decreased public health index, identification of adjustable riskfactors is highly important and efficient. Duo to scientific evidence cigarettes are the mostimportant, most preventable risk factor for health problems and death and also because cigaretteseffect largely on endocrine organs such as thyroid, we found it necessary to gather and do thisstudy review according to complete research on the effects of smoking cigarettes and smokingdrugs on thyroid function disorderMethods: The approach of this article was done in a systematic study review to examine andanalyze the effects of smoking and thyroid function disorder. To do so, the following sources wereused: Scholar Medline, SID, Scopus, CINAHL, Elsevier, Iran Doc and Magiran. From ۲۰۰۰ to۲۰۲۱ with high emphasis on articles of the recent ۵ years.Results: Existing information according to ۱۸ articles indicated that the relationship betweensmoking and thyroid diseases are influenced by many adjustable and not adjustable factors.Smoking with thyroid cancer, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, TSH serum level and TPOABreverse relation and direct relationship with septic hidradenitis and serum level FT۳ and Ft۴.Conclusion: The result manifest a reverse relationship between tobacco and thyroid cancerbecause of decrease of TSH serum level, also because TPOAB serum level decreases in smokers,the risk of having hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroid diseases is less. However smokingcigarettes makes one susceptible to the chances of hyperthyroidism. It is worthy of mentioningthat the relationship between smoking and thyroid function disorder because of its influence ofvarious factors such as genetic, age, gender, underlying disease; and all the results of this articlewas gained through study review that each one of them counted to one of the factors above; inconclusion to generalize this to all the people in a society more study and research should takeplace.
