چکیده مقاله:

Background: Although cigarette is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), smokingcessation has considerable effects on reducing the mortality and incidence of acute myocardialinfarction (AMI). this study was done to examine the effect of status of tobacco smoking and itsshort-term outcomes post AMI. Methods: In this longitudinal study, ۹۶ patients smoking tobaccoproducts (cigarette and waterpipe) within the age range ۳۰-۷۰ years who had undergoneangiography following the first AMI were evaluated. The patients were evaluated at three times interms of status of tobacco smoking, additional MI, hospitalization due to cardiac events, and someother variables. Data collection was done using a checklist and phone contact. Results: The meanage of the patients was ۵۲.۹۹±۹.۲ years. Six months following the first MI, more than ۶۰% of thepatients had ceased their tobacco smoking, but over time and at the end of study, this valuediminished, particularly in those with waterpipe smoking. The chance of hospitalization among themen younger than ۵۴ years who were not smoker at the baseline was ۰.۸۰۱. On the other hand, thischance for men below ۵۴ years who smoked ۱-۱۰ cigarettes per day was ۴.۷۵ times as large(OR=۴.۷۴۷, P=۰.۰۰۲). In addition, men younger than ۵۴ years who smoked waterpipe twice ormore per day were hospitalized ۳۱ times more compared to the men who did not smoke waterpipe(P=۰.۰۰۱ OR=۳۱.۱۱۲). Conclusion: not smoking cigarette or waterpipe over time wouldconsiderably reduce the chance of hospitalization due to CVD.
