Factors Affecting Water Pipe Smoking (WTS)Trend in students: A ScopingReview

Background: Today, consumption of water pipe smoking (WTS) is considered as a globallyprevalent health-related problem. The consumption of tobacco through a WTS is growing inpopularity, especially among Youth, and identifying predictors of smoking is necessary forplanning prevention programs. This study aimed to review the articles related to the effectivefactors of WTS in students.Methods: This was a scoping review study. Data were collected using keywords in Magiran, ISC,SID, Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases in the period from January۲۰۰۴ to January ۲۰۲۰. Screening and selection of documents was done based on the guidelines ofpreferred cases in regular review articles and meta-analyses (Prisma).Results: Primarily, ۲۱۰ records were retrieved, while only ۲۰ were eligible for the study. Theresults of the studies showed that several factors are influential in WTS in students, which weredivided into ۳ general categories, including background factors)Gender and race, history ofsmoking(, psychological factors)personality components, bitter childhood events, sensualattractions( and social factors)easy and cheap access, wrong knowledge and attitude, role of familyand friends, religious and cultural factors, and health policies.Conclusion: The results of the present study can be an important guide for health policy makers inorder to reduce WTS in students. Cultivation and increasing awareness in society, prohibition ofthe production of flavored tobacco, implementation of laws prohibiting the use of WTS in publicplaces, increasing the price of tobacco, increasing recreational and sports facilities are some of theeffective measures to reduce the consumption of WTS, which are suggested by the responsibleinstitutions.
