چکیده مقاله:

Although cigarette is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), smoking cessation hasconsiderable effects on reducing the mortality and incidence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).this study was done to examine the effect of status of tobacco smoking and its short-term outcomespost AMI. Methods: In this longitudinal study, ۹۶ patients smoking tobacco products (cigaretteand waterpipe) within the age range ۳۰-۷۰ years who had undergone angiography following thefirst AMI were evaluated. The patients were evaluated at three times in terms of status of tobaccosmoking, additional MI, hospitalization due to cardiac events, and some other variables. Datacollection was done using a checklist and phone contact. Results: The mean age of the patients was۵۲.۹۹±۹.۲ years. Six months following the first MI, more than ۶۰% of the patients had ceased theirtobacco smoking, but over time and at the end of study, this value diminished, particularly in thosewith waterpipe smoking. The chance of hospitalization among the men younger than ۵۴ years whowere not smoker at the baseline was ۰.۸۰۱. On the other hand, this chance for men below ۵۴ yearswho smoked ۱-۱۰ cigarettes per day was ۴.۷۵ times as large (OR=۴.۷۴۷, P=۰.۰۰۲). In addition, men younger than ۵۴ years who smoked waterpipe twice or more per day were hospitalized ۳۱times more compared to the men who did not smoke waterpipe (P=۰.۰۰۱ OR=۳۱.۱۱۲).Conclusion: not smoking cigarette or waterpipe over time would considerably reduce the chance ofhospitalization due to CVD.
