The effect of a training for life skills on tobacco users’ resilience in healthcenters of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of life skills training on improvingthe resilience of smokers who visited the urban health centers of Bandar Abbas city.Methods: The present quasi-experimental research had a pretest and posttest design and involveda control group. The research population was tobacco and drugs consumers visiting the healthcenters of Bandar Abbas city. The sample consisted of ۴۰ subjects selected through a conveniencesampling method. Twenty subjects were assigned to the experimental group and ۲۰ to the control.To collect the required data, the resilience questionnaire was used in two phases, a pre-test and apost-test. In order to analyze the data, univariate covariance test and the two-sample t-test were runin SPSS ۲۳.Results: The statistical analyses showed that life skills training had a significant positive effect onincreasing the resilience of the target population (P<۰.۰۱). The educational intervention led to theimprovement of the tobacco users’ resilience.Conclusion: Tobacco abuse affects almost all aspects of social, economic and mental health.Smokers suffer from many psychological problems. Therefore, teaching life skills is expected toimprove resilience through, for example, increasing adaptability, problem-solving, stressmanagement, seeking help and support, concentration, and anger control. Therefore, all therequirements of the life skills training for tobacco users should be met in health centers as part ofthe general health in the health network system.
